As a professional athlete: I started competing in racquetball at 17. I did not 'come up' through the junior’ s programs, so I did not receive the early coaching that other pros did. So I did not have mature strokes, and I was physically petite. I couldn’t ‘muscle my way” for the power and control needed to compete on the professional tour. Over the years as I studied the game and learned from the best, I became a stroke technician. As a professional coach, I spent countless hours in one-on-one training with my students in the technical bio-mechanical details of racquetball strokes; I became fascinated with the malleability of motor learning performance. I marveled at how the wording of my instructions, or subtle changes to the task parameters could immediately and profoundly affect my student’s ability to perform that task. What I said and how I said it changed the way they moved; it undoubtedly changed the their neural processes. I remember wishing for the ability to see inside my athlete’s brains, to see what was happening when I used this technique or that technique, or gave feedback with this word as opposed to that word. Watching the motor learning process unfold in front of me and seeing my student’s achievements was fascinating. My need to understand how external factors affected motor learning acquisition grew from my 23 years of trying to improve it. As a student During my last two years of professional competition, I earned a master’s degree in sport science and actively experimented with pedagogical interventions to improve bio-mechanics in motor skill acquisition. I created MuDCAT© (Multi-Discipline Circuit Aptitude Training), a training technique that combines the principles of motor learning stages, biofeedback, blocked and random practice, visualization and vision exercises. I coached at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs in ten annual training camps where I applied these interventions. In Nebraska I worked in both the Center for Brain Biology and Behavior with EEG and motor learning, and also in the Nebraska Athletic Performance Laboratory using marker motion capture to study biomechanics, and explore haptic feedback on motor learning. My dissertation explored the neural correlates of a repetitive motor sequence skill to predict and improve motor performance. I earned a PhD in Psychology, in Neuroscience and Behavior in May 2019. As a researcher: After retiring from professional sports, I began a career in research under Dr. Benzi Kluger in the Movement Disorders Center at Colorado University, Anschutz Medical Campus working in both healthy and Parkinson’s disease populations. After four years of experience with neural signal collection, analysis and neurostimulation and other modalities(TMS, EEG, EMG, MEG), I entered a PhD program at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. My line of research combines my 20+ year experience in professional sports with my experience and education in clinical human movement research. I was an internationally recognized racquetball coach and clinician, and competed as a professional athlete for 12 years peaking with a world professional ranking of #6. My master’s degree in sport science focused on biofeedback in sport applications, assisted teaching a sports psychophysiology course and included specialized training (including STENS Certification) in multiple bio and neuro feedback modalities. The company PantherTec and the Kinesthetic Awareness Training system are products of my competitive career, coaching career and education. Glen Noesen , Founder of Peak Performance Network (PPN) was a basketball player in his day and passed on some good genes to his son Stefan Noesen who was a First Round pick in the NHL. His personal sports journey and that journey with his son growing up in Dallas, Texas dreaming of being a Hockey player fueled his desire to build a platform that could better manage athletic development. Glen pursued his thoughts and founded Peak Performance Network utilizing his existing skill set in the field of building and supporting software platforms. Glen assembled and impressive team of engineers and other key players who have created the most unique Athlete Management System on the market. As Peak Performance Network got of the ground and Glen was able to raise some capital to build it out, things were a slow go due to the treacherous developmental time and specifics required to stand up such a dream platform. Luckily, Glen connected with Kelly Ahrens and they began to discuss opportunities about moving the dream forward. In 2016, an agreement was made and a relationship was born that would push things to the next level for Glen and Peak Performance Network and for Kelly with Test and Train Sports. An extensive amount of time, planning and beta-testing took place over a three year period producing the current mobile-based, web-based Athlete Management System now offered to the public. There was no detail left to hope, nor was their any doubt that this team was going to build a practical application that was user friendly and robust. There was no software on the market nor any process on the market that was or is providing the ability to fully manage a team, group, organization, college, high school, etc. in the manner that Peak Performance Network can allow. Peak Performance Network has evolved to a multi-functional platform that provides real time services and information to athletes, coaches, scouts, trainers, strength coaches, recruiters, administrators ... Finally, a place for everyone to collaborate and one location for all necessary details which creates the accountability necessary to get the best results possible.
